Markuetry is a typically French furniture technique, introduced in the town of Gaillon at the end of the 16th century by a group of Italian artists, this technique in fact originates from Asia and was also practiced during Antiquity. Briefly, it consists of glueing very thin pieces of often rare and precious wood onto the exterior of furniture pieces. Other materials such as ivory, turtle shell or mammoth tusks are sometimes used for very special pieces. It is a very meticulious process where patience and hand-eye cordination are imperative.
